Over the past several weeks, there has been much in the news that reveals the depravity of the human condition apart from Christ. As I write this note, several videos have been released regarding the horrors of what Planned Parenthood (an oxymoron of the first order) has been doing in regards to its death industry. We have seen people, on camera, discuss how they perform abortions in specific ways in order to maximize the amount of money that could be gathered from organizations looking to purchase these human remains. What mattered to these abortionists was the money; they cared nothing for the so-called plight of the women coming in to have these abortions. In many cases, they were neither truthful nor forthright to these women about what they would be doing or with how the remains of their babies would be disposed. And, as I write this note, we have not yet seen the end of these videos; more are to come, and if the escalation of horror that has occurred in the previous videos is any indication, we must prepare for even worse revelations to come.
In addition to the Planned Parenthood travesty (though I choose this word carefully, it seems to me to be far short of being a powerful enough word to describe the situation), we have also been witnessing the fallout from the hacking of the AshleyMadison.com website. Over 37 million users of that awful site have had their identities revealed, including many well-known individuals. Some of these people are professing Christians, which has brought reproach to the faith and destroyed their witness – in some cases, probably permanently. Some who have had their identities revealed have even gone so far as to commit suicide, and the reality is there will probably be more of this – and more – in the days to come.
We are witnessing on the grand scale the utterly destructive consequences from sin, and it should be breaking our hearts, both individually and as a society. While I know from speaking with many of you that your hearts are broken for these sins (and others), what we are not seeing is a similar reaction at the societal level. Some are concerned that the Planned Parenthood videos have already lost what momentum they had, particularly when the half-hearted efforts of our elected representatives in Congress to defund Planned Parenthood failed (the strategy in the Senate was doomed from the beginning). In light of the sexual revolution we are undergoing today, the concern of society is not that there were 37 million users of a website devoted to orchestrating adultery between married individuals, but rather that their private information was released. Grieving over sin is nonexistent because the concept of sin in nonexistent. As you pray for our society, pray for a return to a Biblical understanding of the sin nature existing in every human being, which will in turn lead to the realization of the need for the Savior, Jesus Christ. Without the comprehension of our sin, there is no awareness of our lostness. Just something to think about…
