I have been reading through Genesis and Exodus in my daily time in The Word. I was reading through Exodus chapter 6, where God was telling Moses how He would rescue the children of Israel from their slavery in Egypt. In verse 4, God reminded Moses that He had made this covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and He would keep His promise as He always does. I began to do some math to find out how many years before this time God had made this promise. It was about 645 years prior!
Patience is not something I was gifted with. In fact, oftentimes when I find myself repenting of sin it stems from my lack of patience. I am ashamed to admit that I can road rage sometimes. I know God’s promises are true and that He will always be faithful to His own Word, but I struggle to wait on the Lord for even days or weeks. This passage in Exodus reminded me that God may decide to wait 645 years to fulfill a promise! But while we are patiently waiting on the Lord, we can know that for all those who love God, all things work together for good (Romans 8:28). So, even though the waiting is hard, the process of waiting and putting our faith and hope in the Lord is a part of our sanctification, which draws us nearer to Him and brings Him glory.
So, the next time you find yourself running low on patience to see a promise of the Lord fulfilled, go back and read Genesis and Exodus and see how God fulfilled His promises. Go back and see how many times He promised a Messiah thousands of years before Christ was born. Ezekial 25 reminds us, “For I am the LORD; I will speak the word that I will speak, and it will be performed.”
Let us remember the final words found in scripture which say, “He who testifies to these things says, ‘Surely I am coming soon.’ Amen. Come, Lord Jesus! The grace of the Lord Jesus be with all. Amen.” (Rev 22:20-21)
