As I write this, we are just three days away from the General Election. This election cycle has been interesting, and I look forward to putting it behind us. While only God knows who our next president will be, I want to remind us of a crucial truth: God is in control.
When considering politics, I return to two biblical principles. First, God is sovereign. Whoever has been elected as President was appointed by God and will be used to accomplish His ultimate will. This truth is woven throughout scripture: “He removes kings and sets up kings” (Daniel 2:20-21). “The king’s heart is a stream of water in the hand of the Lord; He turns it wherever He will” (Proverbs 21:1). Paul reminds us in Romans 13:1 that “there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.” The Psalmist declares, “For kingship belongs to the Lord; He rules over the nations” (Psalm 22:28).
Second, as believers, we are called to pray for those in authority and to submit to them, as long as that does not lead us into sin or disobedience. I confess that I have not always embraced this command with joy, but I am growing. I now include our political leaders in my regular prayers, lifting them and their actions before the Lord. It’s powerful to remember that Paul wrote in 1 Timothy to pray for all people, including those in power, while he himself had recently been imprisoned by such leaders. This context adds weight to his words. At the time, Nero ruled, and Christians faced brutal persecution, yet Paul encouraged prayer for those in authority. We have not endured such trials, making it easier for us to follow this command.
So, on Sunday, November 10, 2024, let us find peace in knowing that we serve a sovereign God, the King of kings and Lord of lords no matter who is our next President. His ultimate will shall never be thwarted.
