If we are going to live lives that are genuine witnesses for the Gospel and grace of Jesus Christ, we cannot discount or dismiss the heavy burden of trials when we face them. The Scriptures don't do that, but they also don't present a picture of dreary, down-in-the-dumps Christians muddling through this life. James, the half-brother of Jesus, writes in his letter about the certainty, variety, and intensity of the trials we face, yet he still shows us how we can live joyfully and thankfully in their midst.
